My Mac was on Yosemite, but after upgrading from 10.6.8 I have had NOTHING but constant crashing of the browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) which started after the Yosemite upgrade. Thanks to this note - resolved the issue this way. 1. Because this is a re-install in a computer which has had OS X erased, I don't have access to terminal or system preferences. Opened up terminal - checked the date.
I set the date to the date I downloaded the installer (actually a couple of days earlier), and the install went off without a hitch. Thanks! If you run into either error message while trying to update or install OS X while from an active OS X boot (say, a standard upgrade from the App Store), you Had removed the battery as part of the replacement process and therefore the date was reset to Jan 1-2001. Then I tried to make a bootable USB drive. One is the obvious corrupted installer.
I then ran Disk Utility to reformat the drive and then ran the installer to install OS X.
